Syracuse, NY – On Wednesday, the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee (NOW PAC) announced its support of Dana Balter for Congress in New York’s 24th District. The National Organization for Women is the nation’s largest organization working to advance women’s rights and improve women’s lives. NOW New York aims to protect and promote reproductive justice, secure workplace equality, combat racism and homophobia, and end discrimination and violence against all women. New York State NOW represents thousands of women statewide.
“Women were an incredibly powerful driving force behind Democrats’ success in taking back the House in 2018. We stepped up as candidates, volunteers, donors, and voters and brought real change to Washington. I’m so grateful to have NOW PAC’s support in this race–together we will finish what we started and ensure that women in central and western New York have a real champion in Congress,” said Dana Balter, Democratic candidate for Congress. “The stakes for women in this election couldn’t be higher. With a current Supreme Court case threatening women’s reproductive rights, we need leaders in Congress who are prepared to step up and codify our rights with legislation.”
Balter’s opponent, Rep. John Katko, had been a steadfast opponent of women’s rights during his time in Congress. Rep. Katko supports overturning Roe v. Wade, voted against allowing the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to move forward, has voted five times to defund Planned Parenthood, and has repeatedly voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act.
“Dana has the tenacity and commitment that’s needed to win in this battleground race and turn it blue. After putting in the hard work, she came incredibly close to unseating her Republican opponent in 2018. She is a proven fighter who will flip this seat in November and deliver real change for central and western New Yorkers,” said Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women – New York. “We’re proud that NOW PAC has renewed its support of Dana Balter for Congress in the 24th district. We believe in Dana, because she so clearly shares NOW’s values of expanding women’s rights and building grassroots momentum for change”
“Dana Balter ran an incredible campaign in 2018 that energized people across our community and I’m excited that NOW PAC is supporting her in delivering meaningful change for central and western New Yorkers. With women’s rights under siege, we need leaders who will stand up and fight for us in Congress and Dana Balter has proven that she is that fighter,” said Mickey Belosi, president of Central New York NOW.
